According
to the 1948 Factories Act, Working hours in India should
not be more than 48 hours a week and not more than 9 hours a day and 1948
Minimum Wages Act also states that working hours should not exceed 9 hours a

declares that if a person works more than 9 hours then he/she should receive

Indian Labour Law working hours:
Indian
Labour Law working hours states that a worker must complete 18 years and should
work not more than 9 hours in a day and a spread over should not be more than

are different Acts for workers in different fields stating that after
completion of legal working hours then he/she should take a rest of 12 hours

1.1948 Factories Act – not more than 9 hours a

2.1952 Mines Act under Section 28 to 30, should

3.1948 Minimum wages Act, under section 33
states that an employee can work 9 hours in any 12 hours shift and overtime pay
should be twice, and under section 14 the employer should pay overtime on an

4.1966 Bidi & Cigar Workers Act, a total
working period in a day should not exceed 10 hours and 54 hours a week
including overtime.
5.Contract Labour Act 1970, a contractor should
maintain a register in form XXIII to enter details of overtime along with the
pay of an employee.
Average
working hours in India, according to the Minimum wages Act should not
exceed 12 hours a day including rest period and by the provision of 1948
Factories Act, persons in between ages of 15 – 18 should not work more than
4-1/2 hours and spread should not exceed 5 hours. Apprentice Act 1961 states
that an apprentice should not work more than 8 hours a day and 40 hours a week.
Employee
working hours in India are – Government offices 09:30 to
17:30 ( Monday-Friday) and Saturday till 14:00, Banks – 10:00 to 15:00 ( Monday
to Friday and Saturdays till 13:00), and for stores 09:00 to 19:00 ( Monday to
Saturday).
